Knowing God’s Will

God’s will is revealed in the Holy Bible – He has no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but desires them to repent and turn to Him. But, how will they hear without a preacher? Who will send them? Who will go?

For disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ, we have the Holy Spirit who will guide us into all truth and can give us specific direction and commands. Discerning the voice of God (and therefore His will) comes through experience – spending time with God in prayer and reading of the Holy Bible.

Jesus’ last words were about the Great Commission, to go into all the world and make disciples of all the nations. For many of us, living in a 24/7 world, we’re far too busy doing things which should take a lesser priority. For many, we’re just too busy to be able to hear what God wants to say to us. Jesus stated that His sheep hear His voice. It is not for want of trying, it is for want of listening!

In the Psalms it is written: ‘Be still and know that I am God!’ God has promised to guide disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ, but there are conditions that need to be met. Delight yourself in the Lord, seek first His kingdom and do not participate in deliberate and wilful sin, are just three to name but many.

If you seek God’s presence you will understand His will for your life. God’s will can be discerned through many ways and means: The Holy Bible, the Holy Spirit's voice, your conscience (don’t do that!), through other people (a word of wisdom or knowledge, a prophecy etc.). Before you ever make any major decision in your life then it is a sign of maturity to ask counsel from your pastor, elder, respected prophet or a mature person who knows you well.
